It seems so simple. Listen to what the customer wants and give that to the customer.

Yet, I’ve been in a lot of pitches with potential customers over the years, and I’ve noticed a lot of people miss the mark on this. Almost as if it hadn’t even entered their minds. Ugh.

People struggle with organization. As in, coming together to work as an efficient unit, like cells in an organism rather than a collection of single-celled organisms. I’ve worked for enough companies and organizations, and made stops in enough industries, to say that.

You can give someone a job description. You can train that person. And, unless you made a mistake hiring, that person will do his or her job.

One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that there is a pretty good chance that person, while doing his or her job, will not always see how that job fits within the ecosystem of the company or organization. I’ve also noticed that employers seldom make understanding how that job fits within the ecosystem part of the job description or the training.
